Baby Teeth 101: Why Your Child’s First Teeth Matter

Dr. Julie Melbinger-Wagner Named a 2026 Milwaukee Magazine Top Dentist
October 6, 2026Most of us know the basics of taking care of our teeth: brush twice a day, floss regularly, and visit the dentist for routine cleanings. But simply going through the motions does not always mean you are getting the most out of your oral care routine.
How you brush, when you floss, the products you use, and even small habits throughout the day can make a difference in your oral health. Taking a closer look at your routine can help you protect your teeth and gums and keep your smile healthy for years to come.
Start With Proper Brushing
Brushing twice a day is one of the most important things you can do for your teeth, but technique matters.
Take your time and gently brush all surfaces of your teeth, including the fronts, backs, and chewing surfaces. Pay special attention to the area where your teeth meet your gums, since plaque can easily accumulate there.
Brushing too aggressively is not necessarily better. Using too much pressure can irritate your gums and may contribute to enamel wear over time. A soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle, thorough brushing are generally the better approach.
And do not forget about your toothbrush itself. Replace your toothbrush or electric toothbrush head regularly, especially once the bristles begin to look worn or frayed.
Make Flossing Part of Your Routine
Your toothbrush cannot effectively clean every surface of your teeth. Floss helps reach between teeth and around the gumline where toothbrush bristles may not reach.
Flossing regularly helps remove food particles and plaque from these areas, making it an important part of preventing cavities and maintaining healthy gums.
If traditional floss is difficult for you to use, talk to your dental team about alternatives. Floss picks, interdental brushes, or water flossers may make it easier to keep those hard-to-reach spaces clean.
Do Not Forget Your Tongue
Your teeth are not the only place bacteria can collect. Your tongue can harbor bacteria and food debris that may contribute to bad breath.
Gently brushing your tongue or using a tongue scraper can be a simple addition to your routine that helps keep your entire mouth feeling cleaner and fresher.
Pay Attention to What You Eat and Drink
Good oral health does not stop when you put down your toothbrush.
Frequently sipping sugary beverages or snacking on sugary foods throughout the day can repeatedly expose your teeth to acids produced by oral bacteria. Water is a great everyday beverage choice because it helps rinse away food particles and keeps your mouth hydrated.
A balanced diet also supports both your oral and overall health.
Watch for Signs Your Routine May Need Some Help
Even if you brush and floss consistently, your mouth can give you clues that something may need attention.
Bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, tooth sensitivity, pain, swollen gums, or noticeable changes to your teeth should not simply be ignored. These symptoms can have several possible causes, so it is important to discuss them with your dentist rather than trying to diagnose the problem yourself.
Professional Dental Care Is Part of a Healthy Routine
At-home care is essential, but it cannot replace professional dental exams and cleanings. Routine dental visits allow your dental team to remove buildup you may not be able to address at home and check for potential concerns before they become more serious.
At Mequon Smile Design, preventive and general dentistry are an important part of helping patients maintain healthy smiles. We can also provide personalized recommendations based on your teeth, gums, lifestyle, and individual oral health needs.
