The Importance of Taking Your Kids To The Dentist
April 12, 2023The Importance of Regular Dental Check-ups
June 8, 2023Flossing is a key component of good oral hygiene. Using floss helps to remove food particles and plaque from between teeth and along the gumline that brushing alone may not be able to reach. Here are some important things to know about flossing:
- Benefits of flossing: Flossing helps prevent gum disease, cavities, and bad breath. When food particles and plaque are left in the spaces between teeth, they can cause bacteria to grow and damage tooth enamel and gum tissue. Flossing helps remove these harmful substances and keeps your teeth and gums healthy.
- Types of floss: There are several types of floss available, including waxed and unwaxed, flavored and unflavored, and floss picks or interdental brushes. Choose the type of floss that works best for you and that you will use regularly.
- How to floss: To floss properly, take about 18 inches of floss and wrap the ends around your fingers. Gently slide the floss between your teeth, making a C shape around the tooth and moving the floss up and down. Use a clean section of floss for each tooth and be sure to floss along the gumline.
- When to floss: It’s recommended to floss at least once a day, preferably at night before brushing your teeth. However, you can also floss after meals if you feel food particles stuck between your teeth.
- Other tips: Be gentle when flossing to avoid injuring your gums. If you have trouble flossing, try using a floss holder or interdental brush. And don’t forget to brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and checkups.
In addition to flossing, it’s also important to make sure you are regularly seeing your dentist for cleanings! If it’s been over 6 months since you’ve been in, be sure to schedule an appointment at Mequon Smile Design by calling 262.240.9400.
